Number of public pension funds founded per decade worldwide 1940-2022

The number of public pension funds (PPFs) established globally peaked between 1940 and 1949, with a total of 40 PPFs created globally. In the following decades, the growth of the number of PPFs continued, as the number of new funds created each decade fluctuated between 25 and 32. Following 2022, ten new funds were introduced. PPFs are found across most countries worldwide, but the North America region had the most assets under management as of February 2023.
