thyA knockout strains of E. coli B were cultured at limiting concentrations of deoxythymidine for 150 days. Evolved bacteria were more resistant to thymineless death in the glucose environment used in the experiments, but were not necessarily more resistant to thymineless death in the presence of other carbon sources.
