The MODIS Thermal Anomaly/Fire Data Product is primarily calculated from the microwave radiation of MODIS bands 4-11. The fire monitoring strategy includes absolute fire detection (when the fire intensity is sufficient for detection) and validation (confirming changes in surface temperature and solar reflection). Numerous tests are employed to eliminate false alarms, such as solar glint and coastal zone exposure issues.

The MYD14A1 dataset is an 8-day 1000-meter resolution Level 3 data product with a sinusoidal projection. It is the only data product with three spatially segmented components: fire mask (1D), maximum fire radiative energy (2D), and daily contributions within the 8-day timeframe (3D).

The MODIS Terra satellite acquires monitoring data twice daily (at 10:30 AM and 10:30 PM), and the MODIS Aqua satellite follows the same schedule (at 1:30 PM and 1:30 AM). The four daily MODIS fire observations are used to advance global fire monitoring efforts and research on the impacts of fires on ecosystems, the atmosphere, climate, and other relevant domains.
