VPRS 10874 Register of Prisoners Received and Discharged, "J" Division

This series was created to provide a record of prisoners being admitted to a particular prison or section of a prison and, in some cases, details of their discharge from that prison. It should be noted that some of the volumes in this series may only relate to admissions, some may relate only to discharges and some may include details of both admission and discharge. It is not known why a particular prison uses a variety of different formats to record admission/discharge information, although it appears the smaller the prison the more likely it is that the two activities are combined in one volume. Information included in each volume can vary greatly but may include the prisoner number, name of prisoner, date of trial, date of remand, sentence, offence committed, birthplace (either expressed as a country or a state), religion and age. Some volumes may also contain physical descriptions of prisoners. The discharge component contains information such as the prisoner number, name of prisoner, when discharged, how discharged (ie. parole) and where discharged. Some of the volumes from the 1980s contain abbreviations that are still subject to further research as at February 1999. This series also contains details of female prisoner admissions prior to 1953. After 1953 the admissions and discharge records of female prisoners are serialised as VPRS 4833. VPRS 518/P0, unit 3, was reserialised to become VPRS 10874/P3 in September 2002.
