Complete genome sequences of type 2 Sabin-like poliovirus from Nigerian poliovirus surveillance, 2016-2018

To support polio eradication efforts, we sequenced and analyzed 109 Sabin-like type 2 isolates collected in Nigeria from acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases (n = 84) and healthy children (n = 25) after the switch, using next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques. We compared recombination and reversion sites within samples between the two groups. Recombination was observed in AFP group, but not in healthy children group; some reversions were observed in all groups. This work highlights the need to deepen our understanding of molecular basis of AFP that might be associated with the early stage of poliovirus evolution.
