The Red Sea is the largest, warmest, most saline of the world's seas. In many ways it is a model for global warming effects on marine ecosystems. Synechococcus sp. RSCCF101 is a Red Sea picocyanobacterium adapted to very high intensity sunlight and high salinity. This project investigated the molecular basis of its robust physiology and adaptations to the harsh conditions of its environment. These data will increase our understanding of how Synechococcus adapts to these conditions and indicate routes of adaptation to sea warming world wide.
