Red algae (Rhodophyta) are a crucial milestone in the origin and evolution of multicellular photosynthetic eukaryotes. Here, we present the haploid genome of B. fuscopurpurea. Based on our phylogenetic analysis, Bangiophyceae is confirmed as the most primitive class of multicellular red algae. Comparative genomic analysis sheds light on the origin and evolution of the primitive terpenoid and carotenoid metabolism in B. fuscopurpurea. B. fuscopurpurea genome enhances our understanding of the early evolution of red algae and their unique adaptation to the intertidal environment.
