Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are the first generation of nanomaterials approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use as imaging agents and for the treatment of iron deficiency in chronic kidney disease. However, several IONPs-based imaging agents have been withdrawn because of toxic effects and the poor understanding of the underlying mechanisms. This study aimed to evaluate IONPs toxicity via proteomics and to elucidate the underlying mechanism after intravenous administration in rats.
