Catalog of US federally funded, hosted, and recommended research data repositories

The list of U.S. federally-funded, federally-hosted, and federally-recommended research data repositories was originally compiled in late 2025, from the Registry of Research Data Repositories (re3data). It used a snapshot of re3data loaded into Google BigQuery, which covered 3,415 repositories. A repository entry was included as federally-funded if re3data listed any U.S. federal entity among its institutions with the “funding” responsibility type. Federal entities were identified by matching institution names against a hand-curated list of about 90 agency names and their variants, including common initialisms. Prefix patterns were also used, such as “National Institutes of Health…”, “NASA…”, “NOAA…”, “USDA…”, “Department of Energy…”, and the DOE national laboratories. Inactive repositories were removed afterwards. A repository was classed as federally-hosted if its URL is on a federal domain. In addition, repositories that have been recommended by federal funders, such as those enumerated by the NIH have also been added to the catalog.Several caveats apply. The data represents a snapshot in time from when the report was run, so more recently registered repositories may not (yet) be included. Further, re3data is curated from self-reported information, so record metadata may be out of date, funding relationships may be missing, and repositories never registered with re3data are absent. Because institutions were matched by name, agencies or variants not on the list are missed, and a few non-federal organizations may have been swept in. The list only captures federal entities recorded with the “funding” role. A repository that is federally operated but credits no federal funder in re3data would be missed. The URL-based hosting test would also miss federally hosted repositories that use custom, non-.gov or .us domains.
