VPRS 1597 Suitors' Debenture Ledger

The Master in Equity was responsible for the administration of the Supreme Court in Equity as well as holding various other positions. In 1883 under the Judicature Act the position of Prothonotary of the Supreme Court (VA 433) was established to relieve the Master in Equity of the administration of matters not related to Equity. The Prothonotary later assumed responsibility for the Equity functions of the Master in Equity.This series consists of the details of debentures held by the Court and their management on behalf of suitors before the Court. Details of the acquisition and disposal of debentures are both given. In terms of their acquisition, details of the date of purchase, from whom purchased, their numbers and the amount of each one and references to the cash book and receipt book are all given. Details given with regard to the disposal of debentures are the date they were disposed of, to whom they were sold or handed over (including by Court order, by being redeemed by the Treasurer, by being handed to a party in the suit or by being handed to the Master in Lunacy) and the details of numbers and amounts involved.VPRS 1597/P was reserialised in 2001 as part of the ARAD Project. The former unit 2 is now serialised as VPRS 12694/P1 unit 1 and the former unit 3 is now serialised as VPRS 12695/P1 unit 1.
