Klebsiella has been identified as a critical organism in the global spread of antimicrobial resistance, however genomic surveillance data is lacking in Asian countries. To address this gap we have established a group of hospitals in 15 Asian countries who will contribute Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates for sequencing, with a view to establishing an ongoing collaborative network for genomic surveillance and research. In this pilot project we will sequence 960 isolates from 2015-2016. Key goals will be to identify the clonal groups present in each location; identify antimicrobial resistance and virulence determinants; and investigate the emergence and transmission of clinically important resistant and/or virulent clones in the regions.
