This volume was used to record details of goods returned. Information provided includes date and who returned from (e.g. Police, miners' camp), or who returned to if the goods were returned to an external organisation. Many of the entries refer to items returned to private suppliers, such as Arnott's, Tooth's and Toohey's, and to government agencies such as Maitland Gaol, Long Bay Penitentiary and Public Works. Often consignment note numbers were recorded for such returns. There are many entries, described as “Empty returns”, relating to the return of empty containers such as milk cans, egg cartons, biscuit tins and cordial bottles.
