An analysis of the accuracy of photo-based plant identification applications on 55 tree species, supplementary files

The following image files are assembled for the purpose of a study to compare the accuracy of phone applications for field tree identification in New Jersey. These files are openly available.

The Files are labeled under the following convention: e.g. QUAL_L1_RS.jpg. QUAL represents the species in the image wherein: QU: the first 2 letters represent the genus (i.e., QU for Quercus); AL: The first 2 letters of the specific epithet (i.e., AL for "alba" inQuercus alba). Where there is also a number included after the four-letter code derived from the species name, this indicates that there are multiple species in the database with the same first two letters in both the genus and specific epithet (e.g., Acer saccharinum and Acer saccharum). In this case, the species that comes first alphabetically will have the lowest digit directly following the four-digit code (e.g., ACSA2 for Acer saccharinum and ACSA3 for Acer saccharum). These label conventions for plant species identification described above are defined using the species codes as outlined by the USDA Plants Database out of the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service. Where a species code was not available through the USDA Plants Database at the time of publication, species codes were created following this same procedure. RS represents initials of the photo author wherein: RS = Ryan J. Schmidt; BC = Brianna M. Casario; PZ = Pamela C. Zipse; JG = Jason C. Grabosky. L represents the plant organ type wherein: L = Leaf; B = Bark. 1 represents the replicate number of the image in a range of 1 to 4 used in the study.
