FOGS: Forensic Genetics for Species Protection

The FOGS (Forensic Genetics for Species Protection) project is establishing a reference database with genetic marker sets for 70 species relevant to the illegal wildlife trade. Each marker set encompasses on average 18 variable SNPSTR markers which can be amplified in a single multiplex PCR reaction. Each SNPSTR marker consists of a tetranucleotide short tandem repeat (STR) and at least one single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) within the flanking region.
