Tree biomass and density data in the Furano tree diversity experiment Data description: Tree measurement dataset used in Tatsumi and Loreau (2023). The dataset consists of tree biomass (t·m−2) and densities (trees·m−2) in monoculture and mixture stands after 1, 2, 3, 16, and 31 years of planting. Experimental design: The experimental site was established in 1987 at the tree nursery of the University of Tokyo Hokkaido Forest in Furano, northern Japan (43°13′09“ N; 142°22’53” E; 223 m elevation). The dataset is based on tree census in monoculture and mixture stands of Betula maximowicziana (Monarch birch), Quercus crispula (Japanese oak), and Abies sachalinensis (Sakhalin fir). Tree saplings ca. 35 cm in height were planted hexagonally with 50-cm spacing. The three species were planted at equal proportions the mixture. Plot sizes were 6 m × 8 m (48 m2) for monocultures and 10 m × 10 m (100 m2) for the mixture. The dataset consists of tree sizes and densities in 1988, 1989, 1990, 2003, and 2018 (= 1, 2, 3, 16, and 31 years after planting). The heights of all live trees and diameters at breast height of individuals with height ≥ 1.3 m were measured. Aboveground tree biomass was estimated using allometric equations.
