Cross-resistance evolution between statins and fluconazole in fungal pathogens

This study identified the existence of cross-resistance between statins and azoles in Cryptococcus neoformans and Nakaseomyces glabratus. Experimental evolution was performed by adapting clinical isolates to atorvastatin or to azoles followed by testing for increased in minimum inhibitory concentrations for both drugs. Ancestral and evolved samples were sequenced to identify mechanisms of cross-resistance.
