This study demonstrates that intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR), induced by a 30% reduction in maternal nutrition, leads to early sex-specific adaptations in fetal cardiac mitochondrial function, notably in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) subunits, in a nonhuman primate model. These findings suggest that such early mitochondrial alterations may contribute to an increased predisposition for cardiovascular disease in offspring
