Rheology of eclogites in simple shear, under deep subduction zone conditions

Our experiment ES-1365 aimed at investigating their mechanical behavior of eclogites rocks under deep earth conditions. We request a continuation with an adjusted strategy (cf report and justification) because the current results do not allow for a publication. We will deform aggregates of minerals garnet and pyroxene, the main constituents of eclogite, in simple shear - the most relevant geometry for natural shear zones, in the large volume press at ID6LVP. Powder X-ray diffraction will allow measuring in-situ lattice strains from which we obtain stress partitioning, and X-ray absorption contrast images will allow tracking sample strain. Comparing eclogites rheology with other rocks will help understanding its role in the global subduction zones stress balance at short to medium term (days, years) and the seismic coupling/decoupling at the plate interface.
