Innovations in food manufacturing support the United Nation’s agenda for Sustainable Development Goal 9 which promotes industry, innovation and infrastructure. In line with this goal, this study aims to develop an inventive automated multi-spit lamb rotisserie machine that improves the productivity of lamb-roasting compared to contemporary lamb-roasting devices, for small and medium scale lamb-roasting businesses. The conceptualisation of this study relied on patents, scholarly literature and product reviews of available lamb-roasting devices. An improved design concept is selected using screening and scoring techniques. The design and analysis are performed using the Autodesk Inventor Professional 2019. A scaled-down version of the design is fabricated and tested with several usability tests, namely the (1) roasting output test, (2) roasting time test and (3) temperature stability test. The data collected for experiments (1) are analysed descriptively by comparing the means between the control and experimental groups. The data for experiments (2) and (3) are analysed using t-test and Mann-Whitney U test respectively. Significant differences are observed in the usability tests of (1) and (2), with the outcomes being in favour of the proposed invention. The proposed invention is able to cook 92.27% faster with 700% more meat than a regular lamb rotisserie machine used in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). No significant difference is found in temperature stability, indicating that the proposed invention cooks at a stable temperature. A brief cost analysis indicated that this invention can be sold at 1280 MYR if it is mass-produced. This invention could potentially help SMEs in increasing the productivity of their lamb-roasting business. The design of this invention is structurally simple, inexpensive and easy to manufacture and deploy. These advantages allow communities that rely on traditional spit-based machines as primary tools for meat preparation to enhance their ability and productivity in producing roast lamb.
