The MODIS Temperature Anomaly/Fire Data Product is primarily calculated from the microwave radiation in MODIS bands 4–11. The fire monitoring strategy covers absolute fire detection (when fire intensity is sufficient for detection) and detection of changes in surface temperature and solar reflection. Numerous tests are implemented to eliminate false alarms, such as sun glint and coastal zone exposure.

The MOD14A1 dataset is an 8-day 1000-meter resolution Level 3 data product with a sinusoidal projection. It is the only data product with three spatial dimension partitions: fire mask (1D), maximum fire radiative power (2D), and daily contributions over the 8-day period (3D).

The MODIS Terra satellite acquires monitoring data twice daily (at 10:30 AM and 10:30 PM local time), while MODIS Aqua does the same (at 1:30 PM and 1:30 AM local time). Four daily MODIS fire observations are utilized to advance global fire monitoring initiatives and studies on the impacts of fires on ecosystems, the atmosphere, climate, and other relevant domains.
