PacBio HiFi Metagenomes from Acid Mine Drainage Ecosystems of Gold and Coal Mines in South Africa

This project comprises whole-metagenome shotgun sequences generated from acid mine drainage (AMD) environments associated with gold and coal mining sites in South Africa. Surface water samples were collected from two gold mine sites (SS1 and SRW1) and one coal mine site (KST1). Environmental DNA was extracted from filtered water samples and sequenced using the PacBio Sequel II platform to generate high-fidelity (HiFi) long reads.The dataset provides long-read metagenomic sequences for characterization of microbial community composition and functional potential in AMD ecosystems influenced by different mining activities. These data support investigations into microbial adaptation to acidic, metal-rich environments and enable comparative analyses of AMD systems associated with gold and coal mining operations.
