Dataset and Code for - Pay-to-stay drives the evolution of helping independent of kin selection in anemonefish societies

This repository contains the datasets and code associated with the manuscript: Kirstin Gaffney, Megan E. Bartlett, Theresa Rueger (2025). Pay-to-stay drives the evolution of helping independent of kin selection in anemonefish societies. [Manuscipt in Review] This version includes a reanalysis of the data using a Bayesian approach, with increased behavioral specificity, conducted in response to reviewer feedback. The dataset and code were archived on Zenodo prior to journal publication to ensure accessibility and reproducibility. Once published, the citation will be updated here. Datasets included: (1) PTS_social_raw.csv: Raw social interactions event data collected using BORIS software. (2) PTS_helping_raw.csv: Raw helping behaviour event data collected using BORIS software. (3) PTS_field.csv: field metadata for each anemonefish group observed, providing ecological, temporal, and group composition context. (4) PTS_baseline_helping.csv: baseline helping behaviour (as proportion of time visible) by rank 3 individuals, including anemone maintence, territory defence against predators and defence against food competitors. (5) PTS_baseline_social.csv: baseline social behaviour (as proportion of time visible) in rank 3 individuals, including aggression recieved and submissive behaviour. (6) PTS_experiment.csv: helping behaviour and social behaviour (as proportion of time visible) in rank 3 for each experimental condition Variable definitions are provided in the attached README.txt file.
