To determine whether wild rodents feed on overwintering monarchs in California, we collected feces from rodents trapped at a California monarch aggregation site (Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove (San Luis Obispo County, California, USA). We extracted DNA from feces and characterized the arthropod community in wild rodent diets using a metabarcoding approach. Arthropod DNA was amplified using the ZBJ primers, modified to match the monarch COI sequence.
