ABSTRACT:
Background: Pregnancy is a pleasurable and overwhelming period of joy and excitement for all the pregnant women and it’s so special for the primigravida women since it creates thrill and expectation of the unborn baby to them. But it also places an additional level of stress and anxiety about the health of the unborn baby. Most of the women would be able to cope with this situation but unluckily a few of the primigravida women who are diagnosed with pregnancy induced hypertension adds fuel to the fire of the normal stress and anxiety and are unable to cope with this condition. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of Benson’s Relaxation therapy on level of stress, anxiety and coping among primigravida women with pregnancy induced hypertension. Design: Quasi experimental pretest and posttest with control group design. Settings: Government Ranee’s Hospital, Pudukkottai, TamilNadu. Participants: Sixty primigravida women diagnosed with pregnancy induced hypertension, fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by Probability simple random sampling technique. Sample Selection criteria: Primi gravida women diagnosed with pregnancy induced hypertension. Methods: The study was conducted with 60 primi gravida with pregnancy induced hypertension. Out of which 30 mothers were assigned to experimental group and 30 were assigned to control group. Pre and posttest assessment was done by Perceived stress Assessment scale, and Coping Scale by Rao and Prabhu. Results: Benson’s Relaxation therapy was found to be effective in reducing the level of stress, anxiety and coping among primigravid women with pregnancy induced hypertension.
