This series is comprised of registers recording the payment of rates to the Hume Pastures Protection Board. The registers record the particulars of land and stock, and the amount of rates owing and any payments made, including arrears and interest.The information contained within the registers includes: a progressive number; holding number; assessed carrying capacity of land other than agricultural land; acreage of holding, including agricultural land and other land; occupier of holding including name and address; arrears of rates; arrears brought forward, including rates, interest and the total amount; arrears carried forward including rates, interest and the total; stock and current rate including large stock and sheep and the number and how determined, rate per head and the amount of rate for each; area enclosed by a rabbit-proof fence, and amount of deduction of rates in respect thereof; total amount of assessment by Board; total amount of assessment on appeal; total amount of rates payable; payment of rates made, date and amount; folio number in cash book; number of receipt; amount of rates still due; particulars of moneys charged in holding exclusive of rates, including how charge created and date, and by whom and to whom amount payable, amount of charge, payments made in respect of charge, particulars, date of payment, amount folio in cash book; amount of charge still unpaid exclusive of rates; and any further remarks.There are varying formats within this series but most record the same information, with just some changes to the layout and the amount of information recorded. However, the last rate book in the series has a very different layout, with headings that read: Assessment Number; Rated C.C. (Carrying Capacity); Agricultural Purpose Land; total land; General Rate; MIA Levy (Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area); A.H. Rate (Animal Health); N.I. Rate, Amount (Noxious Insects); date notice posted; payments received and receipt number; arrears carried forward. Some pages within this rate book have changed the headings of the columns to suit the needs of the clerk at the time. This register covers a twenty year period, whereas the earlier registers tend to cover a period of up to three years. The Pastures Protection Act No. 111, 1902, s.16(b), states that, "Every board shall cause true and regular accounts to be kept of all moneys received or paid by it under this Act, and shall give the owner of any land or the occupier of any private holding within the district access to such accounts at all reasonable hours."The Pastures and Stock Protection Act No. 14, 1898, s.19 states that, "The board of every district shall cause books to be provided and true and regular accounts to be entered therein of moneys received and paid under the authority of this Act and the ratepayers in such district shall have access at all reasonable times to such books."
