Study of Migrants from Islington : Migrants to New Towns, 1972

<P>Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.</P><br>To compare the present situation of migrants from Islington in new towns with their previous situation and to examine the procedures by which they obtained a home and a job in the new town. To discover whether they had to commute between London and and the town before or after the move.<br><B>Main Topics</B>:<BR><br>Attitudinal/Behavioural Questions<br>
Present and previous residence: type, tenure, length, amenities, satisfaction (home, area).<br>
Present and previous situation: geographical distance of respondent's and spouse's relatives, frequency of contact, occupation, cost of living. Spouse living in Islington before marriage, age at time of moving, marital status at time of moving, commuting by respondent or spouse before or after move, visits to Islington.<br>
Sources of information: house, job, new town. Previous visits to area. Reasons for moving: friends, relatives, better opportunities, perceived advantages/disadvantages.<br>
Respondents asked how much they agreed/disagreed with statements about new towns.<br>
Evaluation of decision to move.<br>
Club membership, car ownership, future plans.<br>
Background Variables<br>
For all household members: age. Sex, marital status, place of birth, employment status, relation to respondent. (See Appendix 3 in publication for questionnaire). For head of household: socio-economic group of occupation in Islington and at present, income.
