The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hazard Mapping System (HMS) Smoke Product provides the locations of smoke plumes associated with active fires in North America in near real-time. Smoke plume locations are identified through expert visual analysis of satellite-based imagery during daylight. Additionally, smoke plumes are classified by their density as heavy, medium, or light. The HMS smoke plume data is available on a daily basis from 2003 to the present.
