Kodamaea ohmeri is a symbiont (possibly by vertical transmission) of the honey bee pest, the small hive beetle. During infestation the yeast causes destruction of a bee hive by fermentation. This strain was isolated on Oct .16 2017 from the midgut of an adult honey bee from hive "148" at the USDA Beltsville, MD, USA campus. It was isolated on YPD media under aerobic conditions at 25C in the presence of penicillin-streptomycin. The yeast is also considered an emerging human pathogen, and considered for ethanol production.
