El 15 de septiembre de 1574, el rey Felipe II, a instancias del síndico Bernat Guinovart, concedía a Algemesí la segregación del municipio de Alzira a cambio de 8.000 ducados. Algemesí consiguió así la condición de Universidad, hecho que le permitía tener cargos administrativos propios y celebrar mercado propio.
