From 2011 to 2021, retail sales of organic food in Italy increased steadily. In fact, after registering a value of 1.7 billion euros in 2011, sales of organic food peaked at approximately 3.9 billion euros in 2021. Consequentially, the value of retail sales of organic product per capita rose over the same period. Whereas 28 euros per capita were spent in Italy to buy organic food in 2011, this figure more than doubled by 2021.Organic food’s export value in Italy also experienced an increaseIn addition to the increase of the retail sales of organic food in Italy, the export value of these products from Italy also grew consistently from 2011 to 2021. Moreover, as the profitability of this sector rose, also the share of land area used for organic food experienced an increasing trend. In 2011, it accounted for about 8.6 percent of all land areas in Italy. This share almost doubled in 2021.Most operators of the organic food sector are producersAs the land area used for organic food in Italy rose, so did the number of operators in the Italian organic food sector. In 2011, there were roughly six thousand operators. This figure was more than three times higher in 2021. Furthermore, data reveal that most of the Italian operators are producers rather than exporters.
