Metformin Ingestion Rejuvenates Myoblasts from Older Adult Donors

We tested the hypothesis that 2-weeks of metformin ingestion in healthy older adults would improve intrinsic age-related deficits in myoblast (activated satellite cell) function as tested by a series of in vitro functional assays to determine proliferation, fusion index, and myoblast-endothelial cell homing. Overall design: Myoblasts were isolated from muscle biopsied from healthy community dwelling older (4m/4f, 69y) adult participants before (pre) and after (post) the metformin ingestion period. Myoblasts were harvested from young participants (4m/4f, 27y) to serve as a “youthful” comparator.
