This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different back panel materials, designs, and attachment methods on the lateral and back deflection of furniture carcasses under varying static load conditions. Test specimens were constructed from three-layer particleboard (PB) with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) edging, using identical joint configurations. The variables included the type of back panel – either 3 mm high-density fibreboard (HDF) or 18 mm PB – its design, and the method of attachment to the carcass. The results show that both the material and thickness of the back panel significantly affect the lateral stiffness and overall deformation. Carcasses with thicker and more rigid back panels exhibited notably lower deflection, indicating improved structural stability. These findings provide practical insights for optimising structural design and material selection in furniture manufacturing, contributing to enhanced durability and performance.
