San Vincenzo 5 - Excavations of San Vincenzo Maggiore and the Associated Temporary and Collective Workshops

This data is primarily collected for the purposes of publishing the fifth and last volume in the series of excavations monographs for the monastic site at San Vincenzo, Italy, excavated under the direction of Professor Richard Hodges from 1980 to 1996. The volume describes the archaeology of the abbey's principal basilica, San Vincenzo Maggiore, its architecture, and its cemetery. It also describes the associated workshops where enamels, glass and other fine objects were made in the 9th century. The catalogues of finds and faunal remains is extensive, largely comprising discoveries made in a rich 9th-century midden associated with the workshops.
These new excavations have provided the opportunity to reinterpret the sequences of monastic plans at San Vincenzo al Volturno and their social and economic implications.
