20 maple trees were selected randomly from the middle of the woodlot for the first part of the experiment. Another 20 maple trees were selected randomly from the grassland, starting from the edge of the woodlot, for the second part of the experiment. A total of 40 trees were studied for this experiment. The amount of light the maple tree sample was measured using % open space. Measuring % open space is similar to measuring canopy coverage, except the amount of sky seen by making a square with fingers and holding up is the amount of space light can pass through and shine on the tree. Next, the distance from the sampled tree to any tree species that was closest to the sampled tree was recorded three times for each sampled tree using a transect. The average of the distances measured was also recorded. Three leaves from each sampled maple tree were collected from the branches and the lengths of the leaves were recorded. The leaves were measured from the tip of the leaf to the end of the leaf, excluding the stem, using a ruler.
