In this study, we focused on a full-scale sponge fluidized bed bioreactor used for drinking water production in Japan. The groundwater flowing into this bioreactor contains relatively high concentrations of ammonium. The ammonium removal performance of the bioreactor was continuously monitored and the major ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms were investigated using amplicon sequencing.
