Confirmation of expression of capsule types by the capsular switch strains. A) Appropriate capsular serotype production was confirmed for the switch strains by a series of five different PCR reactions which amplified serotype-specific genes for capsule type 4, 6A, 7F, and 23F as well as cpsA (positive control). B) Agglutination assay using serotype specific antiserum confirmed production of capsule types by the capsule switch mutants.
