Mitochondrial DNA is an important tool to understand the sequence of evolution of a particular organism. The entire mitochondrial genome of O. sativa ssp japonica has been sequenced. It was found to be 490,520 bp in size with an average G+C content of 43.8%. Analysis of the genome indicates frequent DNA sequence flow to and from the mitochondrial genome during the evolution of flowering plants.
