This subject index was created to provide access by subject heading to photographs located in VPRS14740 Photographs. This Index is arranged alphabetically according to broad headings or subjects. The series comprises three volumes. The columns are headed:- Folder number, (located in VPRS 14740)- Print number,- Negative number, (located in VPRS 14743)and Caption.Not all of the folders cited in the Index are available in VPRS 14740. They may no longer be extant.Indexing was based on the prime reason for the takinng of a particular photograph. Cross indexing was not employed because of the time involved in relation to the demand for photographs and the general appreciation that one subject would suggest other conditions or a structure. This policy was documented in a memorandum dated 26 June 1957. Soil Conservation Authority file SC/P/8 Photographs and Negatives - Publications and Information Section refers. The same memorandum stated that no record would be kept of destroyed negatives for two reasons. The first was the identification and time involved. The second reason was that such a record could not be absolute proof unless every photograph taken by every officer was received.
