The O−H and C=O infrared stretching frequencies of benzaldehyde (PhCHO), ethanol (EtOH), and their binary solutions of molar ratios 1:1(EtOH:PhCHO), 1:2, 1:3, 2:1, and 3:1 have been analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. This analysis reveals the self-association of EtOH/PhCHO and the formation of EtOH–PhCHO hydrogen-bonded complexes. The alterations in the band shape and intensity of hydroxyl stretching bands of EtOH–PhCHO solutions have been compared with that of EtOH- acetonitrile/acetone/m-xylene solutions that are available in literature in view of investigating the stability of EtOH multimers against dilution by aromatic/non-aromatic solvent.
