Cape Verde consists of a group of islands off Senegal at the confluence of two major oceanic currents and supports a rich and varied planktonic community. Karen Osborn participated in two GEOMAR led oceanic expeditions aboard the RV Poseidon in 2018 and 2019 organized by Henk Jan Hoving. Midwater animals, those living in the water column below the surface and above the seafloor, are important components of marine foods webs and the carbon cycle in the open ocean. Because they are hard to access and delicate, they are still underrepresented in sequence databases. Our aim is to improve the sequence databases for these organisms to enable future monitoring projects that use molecular tools.This NCBI BioProject contains DNA barcode records that were generated with support from the federally funded Smithsonian Institution Barcode Network. Funding for collections was provided to Henk Jan Hoving by the German Research Foundation Emmy Noether Junior Research Group grant, HO 5569 2 1, and GEOMARs POF III for ship operations.
