The goal of the study was to enrich free-living endomicrobia, through the removal of gut flagellates (defaunation) in lower termites, Reticulitermes santonenesis and Zootermopsis nevadensis, using different strategies (Oxygen-treatment, starvation, and starch-feeding). The distribution of bacterial lineages following each defaunation treatment were then analysed using 454 pyrosequencing.
