The OpenMetBuoy dataset is a marginal ice zone dynamics dataset collected by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute between 2022 and 2023 around Svalbard. It contains 79 trajectories covering both marginal ice zones and open ocean areas, providing unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. The dataset was developed using OpenMetBuoy instruments, which collect drift data (GPS positions) and wave information (one-dimensional height spectra) via global communication satellite systems. Its core application areas focus on the calibration and validation of sea ice models and remote sensing algorithms, aiming to improve the accuracy of Arctic weather and climate models and support safe and environmentally sound human activities in ice-covered regions.
