low dose berberine effect on pig microbiota

A low dose of berberine was administered for 2 weeks to 4-week-old piglets to study how berberine is metabolized in weaned piglets and investigate whether a low dose of berberine is able to influence small intestinal morphological parameters, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production and gut microbiota composition.Berberine shows beneficial effects in a variety of disorders by regulating gut microbiota, stimulating SCFA production and protecting the epithelial barrier from inflammatory responses thereby promoting a healthy gut. These gut health-promoting properties make berberine an interesting alternative to ZnO for the prevention of post weaning diarrhea.
