Data are results from laboratory experiments to determine quantum yields for nitrite formation during the photolysis of nitrate. Experiments were conducted on aqueous samples as well as different types of ice. We examined the impact of pH, nitrate concentration, scavengers for hydroxyl radical, temperature, and solute location on the nitrite quantum yield. For the latter variable we examined three different solute locations by preparing three different types of ice: Ice made by slowly freezing a nitrate solution in a freeze chamber Ice made by quickly freezing a solution by immersing it in liquid nitrogen Ice pellets where nitric acid was delivered to the air-ice interface
