A National Relational Dataset of Reconstructed Prehistoric and Ancient Buildings in Japan

This national relational dataset documents modern architectural reconstructions based primarily on archaeological remains. It contains records for 1,014 reconstructed buildings at 346 display sites across 46 prefectures, together with information on construction dates, standing status, rebuilding history, architectural characteristics, designers and institutions, archaeological basis, and documentary sources. The dataset is designed to preserve uncertainty and evidentiary relationships explicitly. It distinguishes display sites from archaeological evidence sites, records separate knowledge statuses for construction date, designer attribution, and location, and links documentary sources to the sites they document. Version 1.0 includes the relational SQLite database, complete CSV exports of all tables, controlled-vocabulary and field documentation, example SQL queries, and validation tools. The dataset supports research in archaeology, architectural history, heritage studies, public archaeology, and digital humanities, including comparative analysis of reconstruction practices, materials and architectural forms, institutional and designer networks, reconstruction histories, and relationships between archaeological evidence and reconstructed architecture in Japan.
