资源简介:
Median Grain Diameter of Beaches in the Pacific North West, February 2021 to December 2023 Daniel Buscombe and Maria S. Campbell, Marda Science LLC Description Median grain diameter of beach sediment grains, measured from photographic samples collected in situ from the Pacific North West region, from 164 beaches between Monterey Bay to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Samples come from the beach face, between high and low tide elevations for that beach. Samples were collected between February 2021 and December 2023. Purpose These data represent a snapshot of beach grain size at time and location of samples. Among several potential uses of these data are to research any linkages between beach grain size and physical, biological and ecological coastal processes of interest. Grain size data are provided alongside the imagery for reproducibility purposes, and also to provide a visual assessment. As such, it is a machine-learning ready dataset that pairs imagery with median grain size measurements and is representative of a broad range of grain sizes, locations, and sediment types (mineralogy, provenance, shape, etc). Methodology The median on-screen grain diameter was determined in pixels, and the diameter of the coin was also measured in pixels. The known size of the coin provided an image scaing, which converts the median grain size in pixels to median grain size in millimeters. Distributions were not kept, and only median grain sizes are reported. Thed median grain size (or D50) is the most commonly used and reported. Distribution data could be recovered from the provided imagery by an interested party. At most beaches, several median grain size measurements were made. All data are contained within the 'allsamples' files. A separate dataframe reports median grain size per beach ('locationaverages' files).
