The Wolbachia strain wMelPop-PGYP is a derivative of the wMelPop strain. It was created by transinfection of wMelPop (purified from Drosophila melanogaster) into mosquito cell lines, passaging for approximately 3.5 years, and then transinfecting this cell-line adapted strain into Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. wMelPop-PGYP was sequenced after approximately 4 years in the new mosquito host.
