To identify immune system genes expressed by horn flies, newly emerged, unfed adult flies were fed a) defibrinated cattle blood, b) Salmonella enterica ser Montevideo in defibrinated cattle blood, or c) Enterococcus faecalis in defibrinated cattle blood. Alimentary tracts were dissected at 1, 2, 4, and 24 hours post-ingestion from each group, two biological replicates. Total RNAs were isolated from these dissected tissues, and RNAs across these timepoints per biological replicate per group were pooled for sequencing. The RNA-Seq datasets resulted in a transcriptome database of genes expressed in the horn fly alimentary tract within the first 24 h post-ingestion of a bloodmeal or bloodmeal spiked with either a Gram-negative or Gram-positive bacteria.
