Brevibacillus brevis NBRC 100599. As in all Bacillus species, starvation leads to the activation of a number of processes that increase the odds of survival. When faced with nutritional stress, this species develops genetic competance and motility, sporulates, and produces antibiotics during the transition between the exponential and stationary phases. The genes involved in antibiotic production have been well characterized and have led to the commercial production of tyrocidine and gramicidin.
