Users can generate tables, charts and maps or download data sets to gather information on the characteristics of housing and population in communities. Data is available for towns, cities, metropolitan areas, counties, states, regions, divisions and for the entire nation. Background The American Community Survey is developed and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. It is an ongoing survey, conducted annually, that provides information on population and housing. Communities can use information from the ACS to better understand how they are changing over time. Topics include, but are not limited to: aging, children, income, disability, education, mobility, relationships, social characteristics and housing values. User Functionality Use rs can access data in three ways. They can generate a variety of tables and maps from American Fact Finder portion of the website; they can gather historical and current data from the ACS File Transfer site; or they can download Public Use Microdata Sample files (samples of the actual responses on the ACS which provide information on population and housing characteristics). Data Notes The American Community Survey began in 1996 and is conducted in the United States and in Puerto Rico (The Puerto Rico Community Survey )annually. The most recent data has been released for 2009.
